Mosquito Magnet Quick Clear Adapter / CO2

Tip Of The Day: Remove the Mosquito Magnet Quick Clear Adapter After Each Use

What the adapter looks like:   http://tinyurl.com/yzdgzcl

Removing the CO2 adapter after each use is very important to help eliminate problems down the road.  The combustion of the engine can be negatively affected by this, resulting in a fault code or not producing CO2.

Mosquito Magnet Troubleshooting for the Defender or Liberty

  • Check your propane tank for fuel level ( Full tank about 38lbs. and empty 18lbs)

  • Make sure that you have not spliced your power cord
  • Eliminate any additional extension cord, only use the one cord that the unit came with
  • Avoid any direct spray from lawn sprinklers
  • Power Cords must be labeled 3amp
  • Place the Mosquito Magnet on level ground
  • Ensure the bag on the Liberty Mosquito Magnet has not been sucked up into the fan

Mosquito Magnet Ocentol or Lurex3

Changing your Mosquito Magnet lure every three weeks is key to optimizing your catch.  Both Octenol (northern US) and Lurex3 (most southern areas attracting the Tiger Mosquito) need to be changed everytime that you change your propane tank.

Mosquito Magnet Battery

Many customers have asked us over the years, “How long will my Mosquito Magnet battery last?”

So here is the truth about Mosquito Magnet batteries.  There are several generations of battery that were manufactured over the years.  The first generation had a black plastic covering over the outside of the battery with a generic looking sticker on them. On average we have seen these batteries have a useful life of 2-3 seasons. The second generation also had a black plastic covering but without the sticker on them. The life expectancy was similar to the first generation.  The most recent battery and the one that we recommend using in your trap is the green plastic covered battery.  These batteries last longer and hold a better charge over time.  This battery averages 3-4 seasons.

CO2 or Compressor

Every week we are asked the question, can I just use my compressor in the garage to blow out my Mosquito Magnet?  The trurth is no.  We are not just tring to sell you another product.  CO2 cartridges are clean and free of any contaminants, oils, and are over 800 psi.  A normal shop compressor runs about 125-150 psi, not enough to complete the cleaning process.  So to make sure that one CO2 cartridge is used everytime that you change your propane tank.

Defender or Liberty Power Cord

The Defender and Liberty Mosquito Magnets have a 50ft low voltage powercord.  There were two versions of power cords produced with both of these models.  One was a 2 amp and the newest version is a 2.5 amp.  You can find the amperage on a sticker that is located on the small black box (transfomer) about 4 feet down the cord.

In the field we have seen the older 2 amp version fatigue and not get the hot surface igiter hot enough to light the unit off.  You may say well it worked before……  Yes it did, but over time it may not.  We have saved people from having to repair thier Mosquito Magnets by upgrading to the newer 2.5 amp cord.

The following link is the newer 2.5 amp cord.   http://themosquitostore.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=14

Mosquito Magnet Trap Placement

Trap placement for your Mosquito Magnet is critical.  No two yards are the same, so we have some ways to make sure you are optimising your catch.

  • Make sure that your trap is on level ground.  If it is not, the water from the exhaust of the trap will not drain properly. ( this is most important in the Liberty because the design of the engine)
  • Track the wind direction.  If the wind blows predominately from one direction, place your trap upwind. This will help carry the scent and plume from your trap.
  • Do not block the flow of air by placing the trap near a fence, shed, or wind obstruction.
  • Place the trap 30-40 feet away from where you spend most of your outdoor time.
  • If you have a corded model (defender or liberty) do not put multiple extension cords together.  Find a closer outlet to ensure that you are getting the proper amps to the unit.  We have seen some units not ignite due to extension cords or old power cords that say 2amp.
  • This link shows a video of proper trap placement. http://themosquitostore.com/zencart/index.php?main_page=page&id=7
  • If you have outdoor lawn irrigation please check to see of your trap is taking a direct hit of water from the sprinklers.

Starting Your Mosquito Magnet For The Season

Starting your Mosquito Magnet at the beginning of the season.

First thing first,

  • Start your Mosquito Magnet when the outside constant temperature is above 50 degrees.
  • Make sure your intake and plume tube is clean and free of spider webs. This is the area where the mosquitoes get sucked up and travel into the net.
  • Start off with a new net and a new attractant. (Octenol or Lurex3)
  • Use the Quick Clear Adapter with one CO2 cartridge to clean out your internal nozzle.  (Make sure you remove the Quick Clear Adapter when finished)
  • If you have a Liberty Plus, Solar Pro, or Executive, charge the battery for 24 hours. ( We now offer a remote charger that can charge the battery in your house. )
  • If your Defender or Liberty has a power cord make sure that it has not been cut or spliced.
  • Fill your propane tank at a local fill station.  Every day we receive calls about trap owners having problems with exchange tanks.  Some of the reasons for the troubles are, they are not filled to a full 20lbs and some refurbished tanks are dirty inside.
  • Write down your start date so you can track when the tank needs to be refilled.  (21 days on most units)
